The Wizard of Oz: The Game

The inspiration behind this project was to turn an all-time classic movie into a video game within a small scope. The goal was to challenge myself and to display essential scenes in game form. The game needed to represent each scene accurately while still being engaging for the player.

I decided to take it upon myself to turn The Wizard of Oz into a bare-bones adventure RPG where you gain new friends to support you in your journey to meet the Wizard. You will play as Dorothy, and every puzzle you solve will add one more of your favorite characters to your party, such as the Scarecrow or the Lion.

Unique Artstyle

My main challenge when making this game was creating an experience that was recognizable as the Wizard of Oz but also represented my take on the classic film. I expressed my desire to be different by presenting the game in a more minimalistic art style. I wanted the characters to be easily identifiable while demonstrating low detail to contrast the original movie’s intricate designs and costumes.

The Scarecrow Scene's objective is to have Dorothy (the Player) block the crows and protect the Scarecrow.

This is the introductory scene to the game and representative of the storm that occurs at the beginning of the movie.

In this scene, I switch player control to The Wizard to recreate the scene where he gifts specific objects to each of the characters that represent each of their desires.

Contributions:

I created all the art assets and background screens. I programmed all the menu screens and the functionality and mechanics for the Scarecrow and Tin-Man scenes.

What I learned and What I would Improve…

This project taught me how well I can adapt and innovate. I approached an otherwise chaotic and detail-oriented film but ironically gave it a minimalistic art style while still emphasizing the artwork’s meaningful metaphors of friendship and self-confidence within one’s heart, mind, and spirit. I would improve the animations, which could have more detail, even with the game’s style. I also should improve the home, rules, and credits screens. From a UI standpoint, all these screens are cluttered and full of unnecessary additions. I need to balance style and visual functionality in this project’s scenes.
