Asteroid Avoid

This project aimed to challenge myself to make a game that only uses one button. I set out to make a Frogger-like game that took away a lot of the controls.

In Asteroid Avoid, the goal is for the player to cross the asteroid field as many times as possible. The game is endless until an asteroid hits you. Every time players cross the screen successfully, they gain one hundred points. I found that despite my taking away controls from the games this project was inspired from (Crossy Road/Frogger), a new strategy arose due to the horizontal view of the game and the way an asteroid could spawn right when you are transported back to the beginning.

I programmed and created all mechanics and assets using Crisp Game Lib in Javascript.

What I learned and What I would Improve…

I learned how to work under certain restraints and limitations. The game plan was to make a project with only one button. The depth of a one-button game can only be so high, and I thought the challenge of compacting myself into a box with specific rules was one I could take on. While the gameplay itself was not exhilarating, I found that even though the play loop was simplified, it introduced a new series of strategies and adaptations that differed from the game’s inspirations. I learned the lesson that simple is not always worse, just different. I would improve this game by adding a proper UI, such as buttons and screens to click through, adding power-ups to increase improvisation during play, and introducing new types of enemies to face beyond just the asteroid.
