Angel’s Ascent

Angel’s Ascent is an endless runner game fully designed and programmed by me! The inspiration for this game was my idea to create an angelic atmosphere with colorful pixel artwork. Additionally, I was drawn to the story of an angel trying to earn their heavenly wings back, hence why the player model looks like a dark angel.

Angel’s Ascent combines my growing love of pixelated artwork with a simple yet fresh take on an endless runner game. The player controls an angel and can fly using their wings to avoid incoming solid clouds.

Theme is Important

I wanted to keep a consistent theme with the color palette throughout the game. I wanted every screen to fit in place with the colorful theme that I was trying to capture.

Contributions:

I programmed the entire project using Javascript and HTML. The sprites and other art assets were made using Aseprite.

What I learned and What I would Improve…

With this project, I learned how intricate a theme can be. While my goal is always to keep every asset cohesive, I needed help to keep within the theme of this game. I kept drafting over and over again until I settled on a color palette that I liked. I kept changing the colors because I could not find colors that matched the game’s art style and vibrant palette but did not fade into the backgrounds. I needed the text to be both functional and colorful. I would change a few things: the title screen, the background animation, and the border. The title screen is a stretch from the rest of the game’s art style, in my opinion, and I would like to make it more cohesive and less sloppy. The background animation is awkward because of the direction it is traveling in. I need to improve the screen's UI beyond just adding the border. The website could fit the game more overall.
