About Brent Chou
What is My Inspiration?
In my youth, I was propelled into the gaming world while battling activity restrictions due to an allergic condition. New drugs later remedied the situation, but before then, I yearned to engage more with other people and had a hunger for creativity that needed to be sated. Determined to find ways around my obstacle, I discovered that I could connect with my friends in ways I never knew possible through games. My friends could be themselves in a supportive community that kept expanding with new people and continued to connect us even during the pandemic.
Through the outlet of video games, I was able to harness the constant urge to express myself through platforms like building in Minecraft, drawing sketches on paper, and so much more! I took these experiences and carried them with me throughout my academic career which led me to want to learn new skills like programming, graphic design, user-based research, UI design, game development, and team collaboration.
I enrolled in UC Santa Cruz as a Computer Science Major and eventually transferred to the Computer Science and Game Design program in which I discovered a class labeled CMPM 178 or Human Interaction Design and Research. During this course, I was enlightened to the ideas of user experience research and user interactive design. From there, I knew this was the career field that I had to work in and I spent every second trying to learn more about how I can get involved with the industry and how to improve my skillsets.
Why Do I want to be a UI/UX Designer?
UI/UX is a critical building block in connecting people through improving technology and online communities. Through this career, I can speak with various groups of people to find improvements for our evolving technological world, and I can design mock-ups and wireframes to set a basis for our technology’s standards. Every aspect of the career, from working with others to the designer side of my brain being stimulated, checks the boxes in what I view as the perfect job for me!
